This bag has a cult following.
6 July 2018In researching packs of this size, I quickly discovered that the Proteus has a very strong worldwide following. There are a lot of clones of this format, and while it's certainly possible to find a cheaper alternative, they never seem to bother cloning some of the better features of this bag. Aside from the usual high quality Maxpedition construction, and name-brand zippers, and so on… some of the best features of this bag are the small details, like gusseted slip pockets in the front section. Those gussets make the slip-pockets actually useful. Also an incredibly nice feature, are the two pen-loops at the corners of the bag, where the side pockets meet the main body. It's a great place to slip a pen, or a compact pocket screwdriver, or both. Of course you can use molle loops for that, but then you end up with protrusions on the flat surfaces of the bag. These dedicated loops store pen-shaped objects like slim penlights in a way that won't have them catching on everything as you move around. Most other hip-bags of this kind allow you to store the waistband away, when it's not in use — but few of them have a nice touch of velcro on the waistband portion, just to stop everything moving around when it's tucked away. There's zero chance of webbing falling out, and creating a snag at an inopportune moment. They've really thought of everything. This is a great little bag, with a long history of fans who absolutely love it. There are many ways to use this bag, but one that may not be immediately obvious, is that it's actually a great size for using as a handlebar bag, on a mountain bike. Lots of ways to attach it, and keep it on the bike securely.
